DNS Zone Hierarchy

Domain Name System (DNS) is the name resolution protocol for TCP/IP networks, such as the Internet.

XIA Configuration displays your DNS server zone hierarchy:

DNS Server Settings

A DNS server hosts the information that enables client computers to resolve DNS names to IP addresses.

Audit the following DNS server settings:

  • Listen On Addresses
  • Disable Recursion
  • Bind Secondaries
  • Enable Netmask Ordering
  • Fail on Load if Bad Zone Data
  • Enable Round Robin
  • Secure Cache Against Pollution
  • Name Checking
  • Load Zone Data on Start-up
  • Enable automatic scavenging of stale records
  • Scavenging Interval
  • Event Logging
  • Debugging
  • Forwarders
  • Conditional Forwarders (Windows 2003 and above)
  • Root Hints

Forward and Reverse Lookup Zone Settings

Forward lookup zones are used by DNS to resolve a hostname or fully qualified hostname to an IP address or addresses. Reverse lookup zones are used by DNS to resolve an IP address to its corresponding fully qualified domain name.

Document the following forward and reverse lookup zone settings:

  • Zone Type (e.g. Primary)
  • Zone Status
  • Data File
  • Dynamic Updates
  • Scavenge Stale Resource Records
  • No Refresh Interval
  • Refresh Interval
  • Serial Number
  • Primary Server
  • Responsible Person
  • Retry Interval
  • Expires After
  • Minimum (default) TTL
  • Name Servers
  • Zone Transfers
  • WINS Lookup
