Document Microsoft Failover Cluster Configuration

Automatically audit and document your Microsoft failover cluster configuration with XIA Configuration.
A failover cluster is a group of independent computers that work together to increase the availability of applications and services. If one of the clustered servers (nodes) fails, another node begins to provide the service (a process known as failover). Users experience a minimum of disruption to the service.

Within each resource, XIA Configuration Server is able to display all public and private settings. For example, an IP Address resource would display the IP Address, Subnet Mask, NetBIOS settings as well as the resources owner and restart information.

All of XIA Configuration Server's features are supported when documenting Microsoft failover cluster configuration including version control, production of professional PDF documentation, reporting, PowerShell, change tracking and XML output.

Microsoft Failover Cluster Settings

XIA Configuration Server documents the following Microsoft failover cluster settings:

  • Cluster Security
  • Cluster Version
  • Maximum Number of Nodes
  • Shared Volumes Enabled
  • Shared Volumes Root
  • Quorum Type
  • Quorum Log Size
  • Quorum Path
  • Quorum Resource Name

Cluster Storage

XIA Configuration Server audits the following information about available failover cluster storage:

  • Maintenance Mode
  • ID
  • Name
  • SCSI Bus
  • SCSI LUN
  • SCSI Port
  • SCSI Target ID

Cluster Aware Updating

Cluster-Aware Updating (CAU) is a feature for failover clusters introduced in Windows Server 2012 that automates the software updating process on clustered servers while maintaining availability.

XIA Configuration Server provides the following information on cluster aware updating:

  • State
  • Trigger Type
  • Schedule
  • Properties

Cluster Roles (Resource Groups)

Roles (also known as resource groups) are a collection of one or more resources that are managed and monitored as a single unit. A role can be started, stopped and failed over between cluster nodes independently of roles.

XIA Configuration Server documents the following information on cluster roles (resource groups):

  • Name
  • Description
  • Role Type
  • Owner Node
  • Preferred Owners
  • Auto Fail-Back Mode
  • FailBack Period
  • FailBack Threshold
  • Persistent State
  • Anti Affinity Class Names

Resource Settings

XIA Configuration Server displays the configuration settings for an individual Microsoft Cluster Resource:

Note: additional specific properties displayed are dependant on the type of Resource. For example, an IP Address Resource will display the Address, Subnet, EnableNetBIOS and other IP Address specific settings.

  • Name
  • Type
  • Description
  • Owner Node
  • Core Resource
  • Dependencies

  • Retry Period On Failure
  • Restart Threshold
  • Restart Period
  • Restart Action
  • Pending Timeout
  • Private Properties
  • Common Properties
  • Crypto Keys
  • Replicated Registry Keys

Cluster Nodes

XIA Configuration Server audits the following cluster node information:

Node Information

  • Name
  • Node Weight
  • Operating System Version
  • State

Hardware Information

  • Manufacturer
  • Model
  • Processors
  • Serial Number

Software Information

  • Operating System Name
  • CSD Version (Service Pack Number)

Network Information

  • Name
  • Adapter
  • Address
  • Node ID
  • Network Interfaces
  • Network Name

Cluster Networks

For each of the networks physically connected to the servers (nodes) in a failover cluster, you can specify whether the network is used by the cluster, and if so, whether the network is used by the nodes only or also by clients.

XIA Configuration Server provides the following information on cluster networks:

  • Name
  • Description
  • Role
  • Address
  • Mask
  • State
